Three Turkey Bowl Champs Crowned

Three out of four East County Youth Football League teams recently took home Turkey Bowl wins.

Junior Pee Wee

The East County Youth Football (ECYF) Junior Pee Wee team finished its season with an exciting 7-6 overtime victory over the West County Spartans.

Each team had big plays, but the defenses held strong. Rashid Williams, Kelvin Beshears, Dylan Frazier and Colin Borrelli led ECYF’s defense. On offense, East County started moving the ball late in the game through the air. Jaden Rashada completed passes to Devin Carson, Marcello Santoleri and Tanner Viramontes, who also had an interception.

In overtime, West County scored on the opening possession, but the ECYF defense blocked the extra point. With East County needing a touchdown to tie the game on third down, Zeke Barber scored off a handoff. With the score tied at 6, Barber delivered again on the extra point, giving ECYF its second Turkey Bowl win in as many years. The Lions finished the year 13-0.

Junior Midget

The East County Junior Midget squad capped a perfect 13-0 season by defeating the Napa Saints in a 46-32 shootout. East County scored first on a 4-yard run from Justice Jackson. Cole Gregerson gave the Lions an 8-0 lead by securing the extra point. The Napa Saints answered with a score on their ensuing drive, making it 8-8. On the Lions’ next drive, Jay Butterfield hooked up with Giles Jackson for a 69-yard touchdown. Napa answered again to tie the game at 16. Right before the half, the Lions went on a 60-yard, 5-minute drive that culminated in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Butterfield to Peyton Borrelli to give the Lions a 24-16 halftime lead.

The Saints scored quickly in the second half to tie the game at 24. On the Lions’ next possession, Giles Jackson took a lateral pass from Butterfield for an electrifying 33-yard touchdown to give the Lions a 32-24 lead. David Trujillo, Cole Gregerson and Ogo Delaney made some adjustments and key stops to force a punt on the Saints’ next possession. The Lions then opened up a big lead on a 44-yard run by Justice Jackson. The Lions’ defense again held, forcing a turnover on downs. With the score at 38-24, Lions running back Timmion Jeffery put the finishing touches on the game with a 44-yard touchdown run to put ECYF ahead 46-24. The Saints scored one last touchdown, but it was not enough to deny the Lions a Turkey Bowl win.

Midget

The East County Lions Midget football team routed the Benicia Panthers 30-6. Benicia (12-0) took a 6-0 lead at halftime, but ECYF’s Jerrin Easter-Williams ran hard in the second half. He finished with 150 yards and three touchdowns after the break. Once the momentum changed over to East County, the Lions offensive line took over. The East County defense was relentless all night, applying big hits until the clock expired. The exclamation point came when Michael Puckett sacked the Panthers’ quarterback, which Isaiah Foskey recovered for a 60-yard touchdown.
